History
Our community library was founded in 1974. We have moved around a bit over the years! The Library was first housed upstairs in the Community Hall, then moved to a room in the School, when the school needed more room we ended up homeless for a while. Then the original Alberta Treasury Branch building from Fort Vermilion was given to Mackenzie County for $1 and it was moved to Zama and set up as a County office and Library. We now have a beautiful permanent space inside the Zama Cornerstone Building!
Features
The Zama Library Society is a few hard-working individuals who spend many hours ensuring that the Library is a beautiful space with up-to-date collections as well as ‘non-traditional’ services that set us outside the box. We invite everyone to stop in and enjoy our beautiful space.

Learn… We offer patrons a few different areas to break out the books, google search for that research project using our touch screen computers or just learn something new today. Large tables, cozy individual areas and mood and productivity increasing full spectrum lighting help make all our patrons comfortable and coming back regularly.
Relax… Our Patrons are a little bit spoiled in the Wellness Room. It offers patrons a chance to truly relax, unwind and return to the grind of the day with a new outlook.
The Zero Gravity Wellness Recliner redefines comfort and massage. A total of 48 airbags surround your neck, shoulders, back, arms, calves and soles, and adapts to your individual body… turn on the heat feature, cover up, turn down the lights and truly experience a little slice of heaven!
Get well… The Wellness Room is another example of offering services that get people in the door.
Exciting collections… we pride ourselves on our in-house collections that are available to all our Patrons as well as through Inter-Library loans to our other partner libraries. You can search our collections online through the Insignia App.
Why do we like to do things differently?
It keeps us energized, in touch with our patrons and our community, and lets face it, it’s exciting!! Patrons, staff and volunteers come up with the ideas and we see what we can do to put them in motion. For example, our ‘specialty cake pan collection’ started with a donation of few and has grown substantially. Why buy when you can borrow?
Our Library started with more movies than books — not so long ago, satellite was a very expensive option. We now have over 6,000 titles including TV series and new releases. With our internet challenges, movies are still one of the community’s favorite features.
Real Men Read!
Zama’s ‘Real Men Read’ Campaign has been more 
than successful. With a majority of the population (permanent and transient) in our community being male this was a challenging target group. How do we get them in the doors? Well, it started with TV Series on DVD, then it moved to Audio ‘Movie in your Mind’ titles, and now we love staying on top of our ‘Real Men Read Collections’ which include Military, Music and Sports, True Crime and much more. Oh ,and the Wellness Recliner is a favorite also!

Free to visit and utilize in house materials. Fees apply for some services as outlined below.
- Membership: $35 / year – across all categories of Membership (Single, Family or non-resident)
- Senior 65+ FREE
- 20 minute Massage Chair Session $10 per session or FREE for Library members
- overdue and damage fees are posted at the library
